The Steelbacks will receive a heroes’ welcome when they return to Northampton this month having completed one of the most successful seasons in the team’s history.
Northampton Borough Council and Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is inviting supporters to go into the town centre next Friday evening to celebrate the players’ success. Following an away game earlier in the day, the team will set off from the County Ground at about 6.15pm on September 27 in an open-top bus and then parade the T20 trophy through St Giles Street before arriving at the Guildhall at approximately 6.30pm for a civic reception in their honour.
The best vantage point for supporters will be along St Giles Street and outside the Guildhall.
Supporters are asked to follow the council on Twitter @NorthamptonBC for the latest updates on the day, including information on the team’s arrival time.
Last month, the Steelbacks claimed their first major trophy in more than two decades when they won the Friends Life T20 final at Edgbaston.
With the County Championship set to go to the last game, the cricket club may yet claim another important honour if they can earn promotion.
Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “The Steelbacks have had a fantastic season. Next Friday evening will be a chance for supporters to join the players in celebrating a year that has seen the team improve in all three formats of the sport, including the dramatic T20 final win.
“This year has been great for our town, especially for our sports teams. To see our town and county trending worldwide on Twitter just goes to show how success can put Northampton on the map.
“Everything is set for a real nail-biter this week with the team so close to more success as they battle for promotion in the County Championship and more silverware. I think we will all be crossing our fingers that we will have another reason to celebrate next Friday.”
Northants Cricket Chief Executive, David Smith, said: “We are delighted to accept Northampton Borough Council’s kind offer and look forward to celebrating one of the club’s finest seasons in style at the Guildhall.”
After leaving the Guildhall, the Steelbacks will then travel to Franklin’s Gardens to parade the T20 trophy on the pitch during the Northampton Saints rugby match against Sale Sharks.
