A clutch of stars from the world of film, music and television will be taking to the track in Northamptonshire this weekend.

The Silverstone Classic takes place from tomorrow until Sunday and will feature a celebrity challenge, with the racing novices taking each other on in Morgan sportscars capable of 130mph and above.

Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart, Coronation Street’s Tony Hirst and former footballer Steve Bull are among the stars taking part.

They have all taken part in training sessions to gain their racing licences. Mr Hirst – known to millions of TV viewers as fireman Paul – said: “I can’t tell you how exhilarated and excited I am – I’m buzzing like a silly little kid right now.

“I can’t wait to get out there and get racing. I know this might sound silly but this is really quite a significant moment in my life. I know I’m a grown up responsible parent and all that, but this is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Adult tickets cost from £35 plus booking fee. A host of famous faces have signed up for the race.

Chef Heston Blumenthal, Hollywood actor Sir Patrick Stewart, BBC Sport presenter Andrew Castle, Brian Johnson from AC/DC and Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole are all taking part.

They will be raising funds for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK and the RPJ Crohn’s Foundation.
