Speed signs send drivers round bend!

A confusing set of road signs on the A361 in Northamptonshire which seem to show conflicting warnings, have been criticised by drivers.

Readers have been contacting the Chronicle & Echo to complain about the "crazy" signage near Badby which has been labelled by some as a "waste of taxpayers' money".

One driver, who did not wish to be named, said: "It is unbelievable that speed limits start at 50mph, goes down to 40mph for about 10 metres, back to 50mph, back to 40mph and so on all in about a one-mile stretch.

"I cannot believe anyone could put a 50mph sign directly in front of the existing 40mph signs, but they have.

"It is also a joke that if you are approaching Daventry on the A361 coming from Badby, the limit is different to that if you pull out of the Newnham/Staverton crossroads."

Michael Richards, chairman of Badby Parish Council, said he agreed with the criticism and would be taking the issue up with Northamptonshire County Council.

He said: "They seem to have put too many 50mph signs in this particular area and have put them so close to where the 40mph signs are. It is very strange.

"I share the view that it is unnecessary to have so many signs so close together. To put a 40mph sign and then have a 50mph sign 20 yards later does seem a bit crazy.

"At our next meeting we will be making contact with the county council to see if they can come and adjust them."

A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: "The legal speed limit on the A361 near Badby is 50mph.

"The 40mph signs on the stretch of road in question are advisory.

"Advisory signs are there to give an indication to the motorist of a suitable maximum speed for negotiating a bend or other hazard in a road."

The A361 is an accident blackspot, in particular for bikers, with dozens of collisions, some fatal during the last 10 years.

The county council reduced the speed limit to 40mph on the stretch through Badby village itself in 2006.
