SOS for Mayday Trust's future
A trust which provides support for vulnerable people in Northampton has invited MPs to see its vital work in a bid to fight off cuts ahead of the Government spending review in October.
The Mayday Trust, which provides specialised support, life-skills training and accommodation for vulnerable adults, like ex-offenders and young people leaving care, has invited Northampton North MP Michael Ellis to see the work it does in October.
The trust runs centres in Northampton, Daventry and Wellingborough and is funded by Northamptonshire County Council, but fears it could lose the support.
Caroline Ward, chief executive, said: "We want to show MPs what we do to help people and how we can contribute to the Big Society.
"We are concerned about the funding review in October and this is an opportunity to show them what could be lost if there were cuts but also to show them there could be opportunities for us to do more in the future."
Susan Mallender, scheme manager in Northampton, said: "We always have a long list of referrals. I don't know what would happen if we weren't here. We provide 29 beds in Northampton for 16 to 65-year-olds and last year helped 40 people successfully move on and live independently."
Sharlene Wallis, aged 28, who has been at the Northampton centre in Eastfield for two years and is about to move after recovering from a drink problem, said: "They help so many people get back on track, If they were to lose funding and people didn't get help with problems it would end up costing the Government more in the long run."
Mr Ellis said: "I can't make guarantees about funding, because everything is up for review and I am not in a position to make promises, as there is simply no money left, but I am interested in the work the trust does."
