SLIDESHOW: Althorp walk aims to raise £20,000

Hundreds of walkers enjoyed the Spring sunshine at Althorp House over the weekend as part of a sponsored walk aiming to raise more than £20,000 for a cancer charity.

Around 600 people took part in the third annual A Walk in the Park event, walking three or six miles around the historic grounds of the Spencer family home to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Organisers are hoping the event, which has raised 36,000 over the past two years, will raise a further 20,000 this year.

Mother and daughter Sue and Hannah Jordan, both of Northampton, took part in the walk for the first time.

Sue said: "Althorp is a great venue and we've been very lucky with this lovely sunny weather. We're walking in aid of a great cause because most people's lives have been touched by cancer. What better reason to get up on a Sunday morning?"

Maggie Farrugia brought 17 friends and colleagues from Tesco in Weston Favell, each hoping to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

Maggie, aged 54, of Weston Favell, said: "We are all walking for our friends Phyllis and Veronica, and our colleague Gloria, who died of cancer-related diseases. Macmillan helped their families and friends get through their diagnosis and treatment so we are hoping to raise as much money as possible in their memory.

"Last year it was just my family and and we raised 400 but this year I've brought along more people to try to raise even more."

School librarian Karen Punter brought her husband Phil and son Jamie, aged 13, along to the walk, as well as family friends Tim and Dawn Newbrook and their children Emily, aged 11, and Louise, aged nine.

Karen, aged 43, of Hardingstone, said: "I just saw a nice way of spending time as a family and with friends while raising money for a good cause.

"This is the first year we've done it and we're walking three miles hoping to raise 100."

Macmillan nurses Pauline Gibbings, Pam Ferrar and Jan Bolton, of Northampton General Hospital, dressed up as clowns in an effort to get as much recognition for the cause as possible.

Pauline said: "Every year we have a theme for the walk and this year we decided to dress as clowns. We wanted to draw as much attention to ourselves as possible in order to get as much money for the charity as we can. Every penny helps and last year's walk provided the funding for two new Macmillan nurses to join the hospital.

"This is our chance to give something back to the charity, who have been absolutely brilliant."

Lisa Donald, fundraising manager for Macmillan in Northampton, has urged people to sponsor the walkers who took part in the event, on Sunday morning.

She said: "It was a great, fun day and all the money goes to people with cancer and supports the charity's fabulous nurses."
