Six electronic traffic information signs costing £200,000 have been installed on major routes into Northampton town centre.

Northampton Borough Council says the signs will provide real-time information on car park locations, car parking spaces, traffic incidents, congestion and road safety warnings, once they are fully functioning.

The signs are located in Bedford Road, Towcester Road, Bridge Street, Barrack Road, St James Road and Abington Square. The sign on Abington Square was the first to go live this week, and the others will be switched on next week.

Councillor Tim Hadland, (Con, Old Duston), cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Providing up to the minute car parking and traffic information is a really important part of our plan to make it easier for people who are coming into town.

“Massive regeneration is happening in and around the town centre which is creating a real buzz. There are also more events going on in town than ever before. These signs are therefore vital to provide people with the information that they need.”
