Anglian Water workers have placed a cordon around the hole just outside the New Mumtaz Indian restaurant in Kettering Road. Temporary traffic lights are in force creating a backlog of traffic in both direction along the busy route.

Engineers have been on site trying to fix the road since 4.30pm today.

But owner of the New Mumtaz, Khalid Chowdhury, said water has been seeping up through the road for several weeks now.

This morning he said there was a large dip in the road and he called Anglian Water out to take a look at it.

He says it is lucky the road did not collapse sooner, or while a car was driving over it.

“My car was parked just next to it last night too,” he added. “It would have gone underneath, no doubt about it.”

It is not known how long the repairs will take.
