Search for 'human remains' called off
POLICE sealed off woodland in Northamptonshire and spent nearly 24 hours searching for human remains following a tip-off.
The extensive search of Hazel Wood, near a boating lake in Cottingham Road, Corby, began on Monday night but was called off on Tuesday afternoon after nothing was found.
Police scene of crime experts and forensic investigators were among the officers drafted in to search for human remains following information from a member of the public. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Davies said nothing was recovered: "We received information that human remains had been buried in a section of woodland.
"We had forensic scientists and scene of crime officers there and no remains have been found.
"We are comfortable that, after the search, there are no remains. The information we received couldn't be ignored."
Their search ended at about 3pm yesterday but DCI Davies said the police inquiry would continue.
Up to seven police vehicles were at the scene and officers were seen leaving the woods with boxes and black bin liner bags which were taken away in a forensic investigation van.
While officers carried out the investigation children played in the nearby play area and anglers at the boating lake watched as the search continued.
People walking their dogs and joggers were also at the lake, a popular beauty spot.
Rick Allanson, chairman of the Friends of Thoroughsale and Hazel Wood group, said: "Our volunteers were in the area last Thursday picking hazelnuts and we didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
"That part of the woods is often used by people drinking and taking drugs but gradually they are moving away as we clear the area up."
Corby Council offered to assist police with the search but were not involved.
