Seaman hopes to ride on crest of Strictly Northampton wave

Able seaman Stephen Dunkley, 32, is a Royal Naval reservist who lives in Northampton.
Stephen is married to Julie and they have a young daughter aged seven.

He joined HMS Sherwood, the East Midlands only Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) unit, in January 2013 after having a keen interest in the Royal Navy for some time.

On a day-to-day basis,​Stephen works for Wellingborough Norse Ltd, a partnership company of Wellingborough Council, as a cleansing manager. This means he manages a range of cleansing contracts in the Wellingborough area including looking after car parks, the market and other commercial areas.

Speaking about his RNR career highlights to date, Stephen said: “I was proud to complete my two week confirmation course at HMS Raleigh passing out in front of my wife, daughter and parents.

“This is something I’ll never forget because it was the most challenging two weeks of my life as well as being a lot of fun.”

In addition to being a reservist and working full-time Stephen is also a keen amateur boxer, enjoys playing tennis, is chairman of his local residents’ association and is a ​ ​​chair of governors at a school in Wellingborough leading strategic management.

He has never danced before, apart from at nightclubs, but his wife is a keen street dancer and performs on stage.

He said: “I’m looking forward to learning how to dance Latin and ballroom.

“Some friends of ours do it and I’ve watched a few Strictly Come Dancing episodes; it looks fun.

“The main thing though, for me, is helping to raise 
money for the charity as it’s such a good cause,” Stephen added.
