Scotch egg eating battle to raise money for Cynthia Spencer

There will be a scotch egg eating competition at the Red Lion in East Haddon.

A pub in Northamptonshire is to host a ‘man versus food’ Scotch egg challenge to help raise money for Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

The Red Lion, in East Haddon, will pit teams of four against each other in a battle to see who can eat the most Scotch eggs.

Manager Joe Buckley, who is taking part in this year’s Strictly Northampton dance competition, came up with the idea as a way of raising money for the event, which is supporting the hospice.

He said: “We were looking at how we could raise money. As one of the contestants, I have a target to reach.

“We thought about doing a sit-down dinner but we thought that was a bit boring. We’re a pub and we wanted to do something a bit more fun.

“So we thought, why not go down the man versus food route and get people to stuff their faces with Scotch eggs?”

The Great Scotch Egg challenge will see teams of four asked to eat 15 Scotch eggs in the quickest time possible. The winners will then go forward to a head-to-head ‘egg off’, with the side that manages to scoff the most eggs in five minutes crowned the champs.

Joe said two teams from Northampton Saints had already signed up, ensuring some heavyweight challengers. He said the pub was now facing its own challenge of making 300 Scotch eggs for the night on November 20.

He said: “It is going to be a good laugh. We’ll have lots of people coming to watch, we have two teams from the Saints and hopefully it will be a lot of fun.”

Entry is £40 for a team of four. For details telephone The Red Lion on Northampton 770223.
