School to be renamed Bishop Leeson
The sponsors of the proposed Church Academy at Unity College in Northampton have announced it will be called Bishop Leeson Academy from September should it be given the go-ahead.
The name for the proposed academy was unanimously agreed by The Diocese of Peterborough, Bishop Stopford School, Moulton College and Northamptonshire County Council because it underlines the school's grounding in Christian values.
Bishop Spencer Leeson was Bishop of Peterborough from 1949 until his death in 1956 and his book Christian Education influenced the 1944 Butler Education Act, which made secondary education free for all pupils and opened up secondary education for girls. The act also introduced prayer to all state-funded schools on a daily basis.
Reverend Ian Cundy, the Bishop of Peterborough, said: "Choosing the right name for the proposed Academy is an important part of communicating that students, staff and parents would be entering a new era.
"The name demonstrates that the school would remain rooted in its Christian values but, like Bishop Leeson himself, would be reaching high to provide an excellent education for all."
If the Cabinet of Northamptonshire County Council agrees the closure of Unity College at its meeting on April 14, and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) approves the Academy proposals at the end of April, Bishop Leeson Academy will open in September 2009.
Meanwhile, the county's education chiefs have confirmed an outline timescale for consultation on academy status for Weston Favell School.
Councillor Kirkbride (Con, Bugbrooke) cabinet member for children and young people, confirmed yesterday that a full consultation process will begin at the end of June and run through until October to take in exam results.
