Saints skipper Bruce collects sports gear for kids in Brazil
Northampton Saints skipper Bruce Reihana has urged children in Northamptonshire to donate all their unwanted sports equipment to help a charity project in South America.
The Clipper Logistics Sports Equipment Challenge is aimed at improving the lives of children living on the streets of Belo Horizonte in Brazil.
The Saints captain will soon be choosing 14 locations in the county where all the equipment including old football boots, balls, ballet shoes, leotards and skipping ropes will be collected from.
Linda Dawson, Bruce's commercial manager, said: "Bruce is really motivated about the fact that children really can make a difference and how powerful sport is.
"Our motive is not to make the children feel uncomfortable about themselves, it is just to recognise how lucky we are and that there is something we can do to help other children."
Children will be able to write their own message with the items they donate and they will then be shipped over to Brazil by Clipper Logistics.
The sports equipment challenge is part of Bruce's commitment to the Street Children and Orphanage Project, currently funding the building of a new sports complex in Belo Horizonte, which will be open from 6pm to 6am to keep the youngsters off the streets.
To raise further money for this project, a charity evening will be held at the Royal and Derngate on Thursday November 20.
This event, which has largely been organised by children from Northamptonshire, will feature a 'Question and Answer' session with the Saints captain and his teammates Tom Smith, Chris Ashton, Matt Lord, Paul Diggin and Dylan Hartley will be attending.
The event will also feature an X Factor style competition including a panel of young judges.
The event starts at 6.30pm and tickets cost 31 for adults and 17 for under 16s. All proceeds from this event will go to the charity.
