Rower Anthony is a record breaker

A teenage rower from Northampton has set a new world record for the indoor rowing marathon.

Anthony Webb, aged 18 and from Rothersthorpe, produced an impressive display of extreme endurance as he beat the Amateur Rowing Association's J18 juniors marathon indoor record by 10 minutes, setting a time of two hours, 34 minutes and 40.5 seconds at the Northampton Rowing Club on Saturday night.

The teenager said: "I felt great when I finished but I was absolutely shattered and I pushed myself like I never have before. I thought I would feel very tired afterwards but I think because I did the training I did not have as many after affects."

Anthony, who is currently studying for a BTEC in Sports Science at Northampton College, started rowing in October last year but has become increasingly hooked on the sport since he bought his own rowing machine in May.

He was also part of a 10-man squad that broke the J18 100km indoor rowing relay world record by seven minutes and 53 seconds on an indoor rowing machine at the Grosvenor Centre in July.

He said: "After we beat the team world record I needed another challenge to get me motivated to train. Going for the marathon world record was my idea.

"I have now got my eye on breaking the records for the shorter distances like the half-marathon."

In training for the record attempt, Anthony did two sessions a week rowing in the water, two sessions of weights and up to five to six sessions on the indoor rowing machine.

Chris Sentance, captain of Northampton Rowing Club, said: "Anthony's record is an immense feat of endurance, rowing for over two and a half hours is amazing. The club is very proud of his achievement."
