Roads among safest in country for children
Children travelling on Northamptonshire roads are among the safest in the country, according to a new report that was published yesterday.
The Child Casualties report into the risk of child injuries on Britain's roads was produced by not-for-profit company Road Safety Analysis, and partly compiled by member Richard Owen, from Kingsthorpe, Northampton.
The report ranked 406 of Britain's districts in order of the risk they present to under-16s as car passengers, pedestrians or cyclists based on the number of casualties in each area.
South Northamptonshire came in the top 10 per cent of the safest areas in Britain, while Northampton was ranked in the top quarter, and Daventry in the top third.
Mr Owen, who helped to write the report, said: "This is great news for all of Northamptonshire, which, with the exception of Corby, all did better than average in this report and better than surrounding areas, including Milton Keynes.
"It means children in these areas are less likely to be injured than in any other places in Britain.
"I think South Northamptonshire does really well because it is an affluent area. It is likely that children have gardens to play in and aren't let loose on the roads," he added.
"It is also likely to be the result of good road safety schemes and investment in Northamptonshire.
"There are going to be pressures on councils to make cuts, but we hope that they aren't made in children's road safety."
The Lancashire city of Preston had the worst safety rate, with one in 206 children injured every year, while South Kensington and Chelsea had the safest streets with one in 1,158 children injured every year.
