Roads across Northamptonshire passable despite snow

editorial image

MAIN roads across Northamptonshire were relatively clear on Sunday afternoon, despite the county being hit by almost four inches of snow over night.

Early on in the day, two jack-knifed lorries on the A14 and A45 caused disruption, but they were cleared by the early morning.

During the afternoon however, major delays were reported on the M1 between junctions 15 and 14 because of an accident.

At 12.30pm a police spokesman said: “Both sides of the motorway are closed. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

Away form the motorway, First Buses reported that they were running a normal service in the town and on the trains, London Midland said it was running a normal Sunday service.

Those who did not have to go to work made the most of the snow by visiting the town’s parks in their hundreds.

Across the county many children spent the day sledging and building snowmen.

The Met Office has not issued any warnings of snow for Monday.

nad it really is helpful when having a pop at someone if you at least have half a clue what you are talking about. Gritting roads whilst it is still snowing (which on Saturday evening it was) is nowhere near as effective as waiting until it stops - which is exactly what the council did and the reason that the vast majority of main roads were perfectly clear on Sunday morning.

I drove down the A45 Saturday evening, no grit, no gritters, nothing, considering the gritters have had nothing to do this year I would have thought they would be itching to get out, not at home napping. I knew this weather was comming and had snow chains with me, I cannot understand why I managed to be prepared but the highways agancy were not.

Three inches of snow and we are in a panic.. The M1 by the way is more likely to be closed when it has not been snowing when lorries can crash through barriers at 90mph. What do I know though?

Presumably, the word 'predictation' is taken from the recently published: 'Local Government Officers' Dictionary of Councilspeek'.(Corby University Press)
