Residents' delight at extra parking spaces
Around 30 new car parking spaces will be created in The Mounts, following a campaign by residents that stretched back over two years.
Over the past few months, bricked areas - often called "build outs" - have been removed from streets throughout the area which has long been a hot spot for parking problems.
Redundant yellow lines will also be removed to free-up more room for residents in the near future.
Councillor Winston Strachan (Lab, St Crispin) has long backed the works and is pleased with the number of spaces which are being created.
He said: "The work is being done because residents wanted it to be done. It was discovered that more space could be created by starting these works but it took a while to get the money to do so.
"It has been a long time coming and I would like to apologise for how long it has taken, but hopefully the new spaces will relieve some of the parking problems for residents."
In May this year, The Octagon Residents' Association, which covers an area of The Mounts, launched its own review of parking, after waiting two years for Northamptonshire County Council to carry out a previously promised review. The results revealed a desperate plea for more spaces.
Kathy Smith, chairman of the association, said: "These spaces are going to make a huge amount of difference to residents.
"We have been told that the council is also going to review permit holders' limitations to try to improve residents' parking, as a lot of people find their spaces have gone when they get back from work. They are also going to look at the visitors' permit system and perhaps look at a system where people get a book of 50 tickets for visitors."
A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: "This goes to show what can be achieved when residents work together to find solutions to problems. The main concerns were with the build-outs, which had effectively become rubbish dumps, and with there not being enough parking spaces."
