Red phoneboxes saved from scrapheap
Dozens of red phoneboxes in Northamptonshire destined for the scrapheap have been saved following opposition from local authorities and members of the public.
Almost 12 months ago, plans were unveiled to remove 60 phone boxes across the area covered by Daventry District Council.
But the proposals were met with anger by local residents and, after a period of public consultation, the council officially objected to the removal of all but five of the phoneboxes.
It was announced yesterday that BT has decided not to appeal against the objections, meaning the phoneboxes have been saved.
Councillor Alan Hills, community, culture and leisure portfolio holder at Daventry District Council, said: "This is a successful outcome for communities across Daventry district who objected to BT's plans to remove the phoneboxes.
"We objected to the proposals on their behalf because they provide a valuable local resource in areas where mobile phone reception can be poor. The traditional red boxes are important to the identity of the villages and should be retained for historical interest."
A total of 34 of the 55 phone boxes made the subject of the authority's objection were traditional red ones.
BT had offered parish councils the opportunity to adopt their telephone boxes and four councils have made a formal request take up the offer. These phone boxes are located in Boughton, Hannington, Holcot and Moulton.
In order for them to be adopted, Daventry District Council needs to take away its objections to their removal and councillors will be discussing this at the next strategy group meeting on Thursday, July 9.
