Record breaking pensioner who once ate a shopping trolley forced to retire through beer-drinking injury

VETERAN world record breaker Pete Dowdeswell has announced that he will be taking on his final challenge this Friday as he is “too ill” to carry on.

Mr Dowdeswell, aged 71, is organising a retirement variety show at the leisure complex in Billing Aquadrome which will feature his record breaking colleagues including weightlifting expert Ultra Man and Remarkable Man, who will attempt to blow up three hot water bottles in one minute.

The final world record attempt for Mr Dowdeswell will involve his friend John Evans who will balance a bed of nails with Mr Dowdeswell laying on it and – at the same time – Mr Dowdeswell will try to eat 12 sausages in 10 seconds.

Mr Dowdeswell, who currently holds more than 300 world records, said: “After 40 years of doing this I’m too ill to carry on now. I won’t be coming out of retirement but I want to go out with a bang.”

The pensioner, who once ate a shopping trolley, is currently in the process of claiming compensation from the BBC after suffering injuries to his back following an attempt to drink a pint of beer upside down in a record time.

Mr Dowdeswell, of Earls Barton, claims that when he carried out the world record attempt in July, which was filmed at the BBC studios in Shepherds Bush for the BBC1 programme Epic Win, he was “dropped” twice by two men who had been employed to hold his legs.

He said: “After I finished I could hardly move. I suffered injuries to my back, shoulder and neck. When I move my arm it hurts and when I turn my neck it clicks.”

Other world record attempts at the event at Billing Aquadrome on Friday will come from Ken Edwards, also known as the Rat Man, who will be eating a record amount of cockroaches and fast-talker Sean Sharman who will attempt to recite the Lords Prayer in record time.

The show, which starts at 7.30pm, has been organised to raise money to buy a wheelchair for a disabled child.

Also performing at the show will be magician Mick Hanzlik, and vocalist Paula Swann.

Tickets are £5 and are available from the leisure complex at Billing Aquadrome, or for £4 by ringing Peter on Northampton 813649 or 07717 288927.

Probably, but why didn't you start before you were 15?

I'm fairly certain that if I were dropped on my head (twice), I would be tempted to drink three pints of beer upside down. PS I have had Weetabix for breakfast every day for 43 years (excluding November to February). Is this a record ?

blizzy boy. Just because I won the last argument there's no point holding grudges. JACKSON is a seriously depressed individual. Never a good word to say about anyone. This guy has raised loads of money for charities and is or was in the Guinness Book of Records several times. So yes, it is news.
