Rapist admits town centre attack on drunk victim

A violent and controlling sex attacker faces years in prison after he abducted and repeatedly raped a woman on a night out in Northampton.

Nhalnhoa Monyai, aged 30, took advantage of his victim's drunkenness, leading her away from the town centre by playing the good Samaritan.

The victim was driven away from St Peter's Way car park and then held against her will while subjected to a series of violent rapes.

At Northampton Crown Court today, he pleaded guilty to three rape charges and false imprisonment, less than three weeks since the attack.

Monyai, of Perry Street, Abington, Northampton, surrendered to police days after they released an artist's impression in a high-profile media campaign.

His 22-year-old Chinese victim, who speaks only broken English, had been out drinking with friends in NBs in Bridge Street in the early hours of Saturday, February 20.

Not used to drinking alcohol, she had decided to stay out after her friends left the nightclub.

Unable to call a taxi due to the language barrier, she handed her phone to a passer-by who assured her he would take her home.

But instead, Monyai, an agency worker from South Africa, walked her to his car, drove her to an isolated spot and raped her.

One of her friends heard her ordeal when Monyai failed to hang up her mobile phone which he had kept in his pocket.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating Northamptonshire Police's actions before the rapes as the victim was slumped in the street between 2.30am and 3.30am when several police officers were on patrol.

CCTV cameras showed members of the public approaching police officers and apparently raising concerns for her welfare.

Det Chief Insp Andy Tennet, from Professional Standards, has confirmed the county force voluntarily referred itself to the IPCC.

Det Insp Nick Gray said: "Thanks to the public, media and our partners in the local CCTV offices, the offender in this case was identified and brought to justice quickly, leading him to plead guilty less than three weeks since the incident took place.

"Incidents of this nature are rare and we take a very robust stance towards the offence of rape and we do everything we can to encourage victims of rape to report their crime to us."
