Rail protest group will fight plans

A walk along the route of a proposed new high-speed rail link is being organised by a protest group to highlight the effect the plans would have on the Northamptonshire countryside.

South Northamptonshire Action Group (SNAG) has been formed by business people, farmers and landowners opposed to plans for High Speed Two (HS2), which would provide a new rail link between London and Birmingham.

Spokesman for SNAG, Liz Williams, said she wanted to raise public awareness of the "massive threat" that the new railway would pose to a large swathe of South Northamptonshire.

She said: "The railway will destroy everything in its path and will destroy large parts of the British countryside. People have spent all their lives living in places like Chipping Warden and now they will be unable to sell their houses.

"The Government has said there will be 28 trains an hour which means the noise will be horrendous. We are planning to do the walk some time between late summer and the start of autumn.

"We will be liaising with farmers to make sure we do not affect any crops. It may not be the exact route but we will try to walk as near to it as we can."

Since the plan to walk the route was announced last week, more than 200 people across the country have signed up and SNAG members are hoping to gain even more support on Sunday when they meet their counterparts in Buckinghamshire, which is also heavily affected by the proposed route.

At the first meeting of SNAG more than 80 people attended and the group has organised itself into sub-groups, each with a specific focus in order to counter every aspect of the Government proposals.

There is also a SNAG facebook group which the public can join.
