"Justice has been done" says rape victim's mum
The mother of a teenage girl who was brutally raped behind a Northampton pub has said she is pleased "justice has been done" and her daughter's attacker is finally behind bars.
On Tuesday, predatory rapist Ismail Ahmed, aged 27, was convicted of a sustained attack on his 15-year-old victim in August last year, raping her twice as she walked home from a night out.
Speaking to the Chron, the girl's mum, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: "We are very pleased that justice has been done and we can now try to repair the damage that has been done – not only physically but psychologically – to my daughter.
"It was an horrific ordeal for all concerned and I hope other women find the courage my daughter did to seek justice and not to suffer in silence."
She said she broke down in tears at the end of the trial when, following a seven-hour deliberation, a jury found Ahmed guilty of raping her teenage daughter on August 2.
The trial was told the girl had been walking home from Northampton town centre after she was separated from her friends in Bridge Street.
She met Ahmed in Abington Street and as they walked along Wellingborough Road, when they neared The Fiddlers public house, he tried to kiss her.
He then led her to the corner of Palmerston Road and St Edmund's Road where the sex attack took place.
The mother said hearing the graphic details of her daughter's ordeal in court had been an "horrendous" experience.
Speaking of the moment the jury found Ahmed guilty, she said: "I just broke down in tears when I heard the words.
"I felt a weight immediately lifted, but then it hurt all over again straight away. It was terrible. Hopefully my daughter can go forward now.
"She hasn't been able to see a counsellor since February because the police wanted the memories fresh in her mind. She is trying to do her exams and she has had to wait all this time for it to go through."
She thanked the prosecution barrister and judge for their "professionalism" and the jury "for serving justice".
Ahmed faces an "inevitable" prison sentence and will then be deported back to Tanzania.
