Pub chain runs to aid charity's race day

A PUB chain is supporting efforts to raise money for cancer care in the county by encouraging its regulars to sign up for Marie Curie Cancer Care's Great Daffodil Run and Daffodil Dash later this year.

As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, the McManus Pub Company will be encouraging staff and regulars at its pubs in the county to enter the 10km race and 1.5km family fun run to be held at Kelmarsh Hall in May.

Company director Paul McManus said: "As part of our 40th year, our pubs have been choosing local charities to support throughout the year but we also wanted to help a charity on a company basis.

"My dad died of cancer in Cynthia Spencer Hospice and I think when something has touched you it makes you more likely to go down that route when it comes to choosing a charity."

Mr McManus has taken part in the Great Daffodil Run before and is already signed up for this year.

He said: "Training for a 10km race is a great way to get fit for summer because it gives you a goal to aim for.

"On the day there's always a lovely atmosphere of support from families and friends that come along to cheer on the runners. There's lots of entertainment and, of course, it's all for a good cause."

As part of its drive to help the charity, every McManus pub will promote the Great Daffodil Run and Daffodil Dash within their premises and encourage regulars to sign up, or to sponsor those already signed up to take part.

Mr McManus said the chain was hoping to put on after-race events to congratulate the runners and would offer staff or managers raising the most money a free night out with friends paid for by the company.

More than 350 people have already signed up for the 10km Great Daffodil Dash on May 23, with more than 120 registered for the 1.5km Daffodil Dash. For details call 08700 340040, email daffodil.runs@mariecurie.org.uk or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/running.
