Prostitutes now 'non-existent' in Spring Boroughs
A crackdown on street prostitution in Spring Boroughs has resulted in the number of regular sex workers in the area falling from more than 200 to zero.
In the four years since CASPAR+NR was launched, Northamptonshire Police set up the "tolerated zone" where prostitutes were allowed to work, but the Castle safer community team has now confirmed there are no women regularly walking the streets.
Meanwhile, the team is trying to stamp out the illegal drugs trade, acting on more than 30 drugs warrants in the area in the past three months.
Sgt Rod Williams said crime trends in Castle were now "all very good", but added a concerted effort would have to be made to ensure the reductions were sustained.
He said: "I've seen Spring Boroughs at its worst, and now I'm seeing it at its best. If you asked anyone four years ago what the biggest problem was, there was no doubt it was prostitution. It was a scourge, but the area has been completely transformed."
The SRA report issued a note of warning that youth crime and anti-social behaviour in Castle was a "potentially volatile" situation which had until now been contained through engagement with young people.
Sgt Williams agreed this work needed to continue.
He said: "The CASPAR team has done a great job, in particular setting up a youth club which runs every Thursday.
"I would not want to see the back of that and my own view is that there is not enough youth provision in the area.
