Prisoner died while on suicide watch

AN inmate who died of "under nutrition" while on suicide watch in a Northamptonshire jail was self-harming and refusing treatment over his impending deportation, an inquest has heard.

Ukrainian Aleksey Baranovsky, aged 33, died in June 2006 at in the health centre of HMP Rye Hill where he was serving a seven-year sentence.

The inquest into his death heard today he had been eligible for parole but was due to be deported upon his release and made "a sort of protest" by repeatedly cutting himself while an inmate at the prison.

His refusal of food and medical treatment for his injuries, which he repeatedly re-opened, had led to him being placed on suicide watch.

Mr Baranovsky, who was transferred to HMP Rye Hill in February 2006 after serving the early part of his sentence in other prisons, was placed under suicide and self-harm (SASH) watch in April, and was confirmed dead on June 10. A post mortem found the cause of death was under nutrition.

Resuming the inquest at the Diamond Centre in Irthlingborough, Tom Osborne, the Assistant Deputy Coroner for Northamptonshire, said Mr Baranovsky "eventually lost so much blood that was not replaced and he died.

Mr Baranovsky did not want to return to the Ukraine because he thought his life would be in danger if he did.

"As a sort of protest against deportation, he started to self-harm by cutting himself and thereafter picking at the scabs, and was bleeding as a result."

The inquest, which is expected to last a month, continues.
