Primary school pupil suspended in knife incident
A primary school pupil from Northampton has been temporarily excluded after taking a cheese knife into class.
Northamptonshire County Council last night confirmed the young student, who attends East Hunsbury Primary School, had been suspended for two weeks after taking the knife into school and showing it to a classmate.
The school has said the pupil, who has special educational needs, did not threaten, harm or intimidate anyone with the knife.
However, staff and governors at the Penvale Road school say they are now liaising with Northamptonshire County Council before making a decision on how to deal with the incident.
In a statement, Rita Arundel, headteacher at East Hunsbury Primary School, said: "A year five pupil has been excluded for two weeks after he brought a knife into school.
"At no point did the boy threaten anyone with this knife and no-one was harmed. The school took immediate action to deal with this incident and are liaising closely with governors and the county council."
One parent at East Hunsbury Primary School has already contacted the Chron to voice their concern about the incident.
However, Mrs Arundel stressed it was the first time the school - which was rated as "good" with several "outstanding" features during a recent Ofsted inspection - had experienced an incident like this.
She said the pupil had been dealt with immediately and had told parents the incident was an isolated case that was being treated "very seriously".
Mrs Arundel said: "The school has never had an incident like this before in the 21 years it has been open, and we want to reassure parents that we are taking the matter very seriously.
"The school has a robust behaviour policy and all children who breach this will be dealt with accordingly. The pupil is one of 37 pupils attending with a statement of special educational needs and we remain proud of our successful inclusive practice."
