Predicted population figure is 50,000 out
Latest Government statistics suggest the number of people living in Northamptonshire by 2023 will be 50,000 fewer than predicted just four years ago.
In 2006, the Office of National Statistics said there would be 834,400 people living in the county by 2023.
But, despite the Government's housing expansion plans for the county, latest figures published yesterday suggest the 2023 population is now predicted to be just 786,100 - a drop of almost six per cent on the 2006 prediction.
The drop has angered the leaders of Northamptonshire County Council, which receives Government funding based on the number of people recorded as living in the county.
The council's cabinet member for growth, Councillor Heather Smith (Con, Prebendal) said: "We all know this area has been targeted for population growth, but it seems as if this has been forgotten. Northamptonshire is the fastest growing county in England and our figures show this is only going to increase.
"We've been targeted by the Government as one of the four major hubs of economic and population expansion in the country. This is all well and good, but we need the support of the Government if this is going to happen and being short-changed really isn't good enough."
While figures show a predicted drop in Northamptonshire's population by 2023, the prediction for Northampton itself is a seven per cent increase to 254,100 because of high levels of immigration from other countries.
The council is now planning to lobby the Government to look at the county's figures again.
