Police warning as pensioner prevents distraction burglary
Police are warning people to be careful who they answer the door to after a 65-year-old woman thwarted an attempted distraction burglary in Northamptonshire.
Between 8.55pm and 9.05pm on Sunday two men knocked at the door of a home in Grove Road, Brafield on the Green, claiming to be from the gas board.
They said they needed access to the property but the woman kept the chain on her door and told them she would check they were genuine.
She closed the front door, phoned the gas board, which was closed, and returned to the door to tell the men they would not be allowed in, but they had left.
"Although our advice would always be don't open the door to strangers, this lady did the right thing by not letting these people in to her home and by checking if they were genuine," said a police spokesman.
Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have seen two men in the area on Sunday evening. Both were white, not very tall and wore hats or scarves covering their faces.
Witnesses or anyone with information can contact police on 08453 700 700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
