Police crack down on egg-attack teenagers

Police have been granted temporary powers to ban teenage troublemakers from a Daventry estate blighted by anti-social behaviour and a recent spate of "eggings".

The six-week dispersal order, which spans the school summer holidays, has been introduced on the troubled Southbrook estate and will run until September 7.

The order gives police officers and PCSOs the power to ban troublesome teens from the estate for up to 24 hours, break up gangs of teenagers and send home any anti-social children aged under 16.

Insp Julia Potts, from Daventry Police, said the order sent out a "clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in Daventry".

She said: "Local people have told us they are concerned about anti-social behaviour in the area. They are specifically concerned about groups of young people gathering and causing a nuisance by swearing and intimidating passers-by as well as throwing items, including eggs, at people.

"We are determined to tackle this type of behaviour and the dispersal order is just one way we are doing that. It means we will be able to move people on and so free up facilities for legitimate users who may otherwise be put off."

The dispersal order applies to Hood Road, including the shops in Admirals Way and the alleyway leading from Hood Road to Hawke Road, into Dartmouth Row. It also includes the area in front of Danetre School.

Officers only have the power to move on people who are believed to be involved in anti-social behaviour.

A range of activities, organised by the Daventry District & South Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership, will also take place for youngsters. Insp Potts added: "I would also like to remind parents that it is their responsibility to make sure they know where their children are at all times during the school holidays and to make sure they are not involved in anti-social behaviour."
