Police officer set to be dedicated to every school

Every school in Northampton, Daventry and Towcester is to get a dedicated police officer to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and bullying.

Schools' liaison officers are to be introduced throughout the whole of the Northamptonshire West policing area in a move to cut incidents among young people in the county.

Many schools have had their own officer for several years but the scheme is to be expanded to include each school in this part of the county.

Announcing the changes during a monthly podcast broadcast, temporary Chief Superintendent George Shipman, area commander for Northamptonshire West, said: "As part of the Safer Schools Partnership every school across Northamptonshire West is to be allocated a dedicated safer community team officer who will maintain a link with that school.

"This will involve working with the pupils, dependent upon the needs of the school, offering regular contact, undertaking presentations and crime prevention advice, as well as minimising anti-social behaviour and preventing the risk of re-offending."

Latest figures released by Northamptonshire Police have shown anti-social behaviour has fallen in the county by five per cent in the past three months, compared with the same period the previous year and in Northampton, nuisance behaviour has dropped by more than 20 per cent.

Jane Herriman, principal of The Duston School, said introducing a liaison officer about four years ago had a "very positive" impact on the students.

She said: "Our officer has helped the students and their families with all sorts of issues, and we believe that has led to a fall in crime in the Duston area and in the community here.

"When we brought our officer in, it wasn't because the school was difficult or had any specific problems, it was to improve perceptions among the students about the police force.

"The effect has been very positive and that's why the model is now being repeated elsewhere."
