Police defend decision to demolish town centre snowball

Police defended criticism of officers who destroyed a giant snowball in Northampton town centre.

The officers came under fire for breaking up the snowball with spades in Northampton, which was blanketed by heavy snow yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said the officers were two special constables who were on duty because they could not get to their day jobs.

She said: "They came across the giant snowball that had been left in the carriageway.

"It was causing an obstruction to a road and it was because of that reason that they destroyed it.

"It had to be moved out of the way to allow traffic to move."

But 24-year-old Ben Elijah, on Northampton, said it was harmless fun.

He said: "The police stamped on it for no good reason.

"It just seemed like petty officiousness, as though his uniform gave him an opportunity to have a power trip."
