Plea to take away post office plans

A string of objections have been levelled against plans to convert a former Northampton post office into a take-away.

Developers have submitted proposals to turn the Bushland Road Post Office site, in Headlands, into a hot food outlet, but the scheme has prompted a number of complaints to Northampton Borough Council.

Barring occasional spells as a charity shop, the site has been vacant for almost a decade and, although it lies within a small parade of shops, neighbouring residents appear dead set against the transformation plan.

Borough councillor for the area, Brian Markham (Lib Dem, Headlands), said noise and fumes from the extraction system required would have a "detrimental" effect on the lives of people living nearby.

He said: "It would also add to parking problems in Bushland Road and road safety concerns at the junction of Bushland Road and Bush Hill. The road is narrow with a shortage of car parking and a large number of traffic movements."

According to a report going before the borough council's planning committee on August 24, a total of 19 separate objections have been made by residents focusing on a range of issues, including traffic and parking problems, litter, cooking smells, noise pollution and an over-abundance of takeaway outlets within a half-mile radius of the site.

However, planning officer, Geoff Wyatt, said the new use had to be considered as acceptable as it would bring a vacant building back into use, stimulating the parade itself and preventing the building falling into a further state of disrepair.

Northamptonshire Police reported there was also "very little" reported crime in the immediate vicinity, he said.

He added: "It is proposed to close the premises at 9.30pm and this is considered acceptable and should not create any significant noise and disturbance to nearby residents".

The takeaway would be open from 11am-9.30pm Monday to Saturday and would be closed on Sundays.
