Piles of vomit in restaurant and cockroaches in bedrooms on Dominican Republic 'holiday from Hell'
Piles of vomit, cockroaches in bedrooms and inedible food are among a litany of allegations raised by a group of Northampton holidaymakers in a High Court claim against tour operators First Choice.
Five groups from the town are suing the firm over an alleged "holiday from Hell" in the Dominican Republic, which they say led to them suffering food poisoning.
More than 400 holidaymakers are claiming about 3 million in damages in total, with allegations including faeces in the swimming pool, "stone-cold" food, flies and birds being allowed to pick at the buffet, and a hotel which smelt of sewage.
Aaron, Adrian, Clare and Jake Andrews, of Debdale Road, Abington; Elaine Bruce of Upper Thrift Street, Abington; Josie Carroll, of, Flintcomb Rise, Blackthorn; David Macnamara of King Edward Road, Abington; and Ciara Labrum and Louise Tilbury of Worcester Close, Little Billing, are all named on the High Court writ.
Amandeep Dhillon, of Irwin Mitchell, has been handling the case. He said: "Originally the outbreak led to a group of over 1,000 clients pursuing claims primarily against First Choice and Thomas Cook/My Travel.
"However, the Thomas Cook and My Travel claims were settled for a record sum for this type of claim of around 3.5 million. First Choice have not settled so far and we are now pressing for an early court hearing, hopefully later this year.
"There are not as many claimants in the claim against First Choice - just over 400 - but I would anticipate that a total compensation sum of around the 3 million mark could well be involved."
Claimants allege they suffered acute gastroenteritis following their stay at the all-inclusive four-star Bahia Principe Hotel in San Juan in the summer of 2007.
They said food was not covered, the restaurant allowed in dogs, birds, mice and insects and they allegedly saw mice on tables.
The group is claiming for illness, injury, loss of or diminution in value of their holidays, distress, anxiety, and injury to feelings.
