Patrol cars' accident bill

More than 30 police officers in Northampton took part in a campaign to catch suspects using stolen cars or vehicles linked to crimes around the country.

The nationwide Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) day took place on Friday in Northampton and resulted in six arrests.

Inspector Andy Hall said: "Many criminals rely on vehicles to commit crime.

"There are very strong links between illegal use of motor vehicles on the road and other types of serious crime.

"ANPR is a valuable tool in the police campaign to make our streets safer allowing the majority of people lawfully using our roads to continue to do so unhindered," he added.

Nine cars were also seized during the operation.
