Parent criticises window replacement at old school
Concerns have been raised about a decision to change the historic windows of a Northampton Primary School built in the 19th century.
Work is being carried out at Barry Primary School, off Wellingborough Road, to replace the Victorian windows on the side of the school.
But the decision has been criticised by one parent who feels the design of the new windows would damage the attractiveness of the school buildings and surrounding area.
Martin Ellison, who has a child at the school, said: "I am appalled by the nonchalant disfigurement of a historic building in the town. The building is a good example of an early education board school, constructed circa 1880, but one which does not meet the stringent criteria for protection at the national level through inclusion on the statutory list of building of special architectural or historic interest.
"The existing windows give the frontage expression and add considerably to the visual interest of the building. All that is required to keep them in good order is a repaint and possibly a draft sealing system."
A spokesman from Northamptonshire County Council said special consideration had been given to ensuring the windows being fitted were sympathetic to the nature of the building.
