Paedophile kept drugs worth £15k in caravan

Police found £15,000 worth of cannabis in a paedophile's caravan when they arrested him for breaching his bail by associating with underage girls.

Wayne Evans, aged 44, was jailed for three years after he admitted sexual assaults against four girls, one as young as nine, as well as possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Northampton Crown Court heard how Evans was on bail for offences against two underage girls when police visited his caravan at Castle Ashby fisheries on June 7.

Pearl Willis, prosecuting, said a condition of his bail was not to associate with or have unsupervised contact with children under 16 but police had been alerted by a concerned mother.

She said: "The police went to the caravan, arrested him for breach of bail and found a large amount of cannabis, 21 bars of nine ounces. Electronic scales were also recovered."

Evans had been on bail for an indecent assault upon a 10-year-old girl in 2002 while on a holiday in Spain, which only came to light when a 15-year-old made a similar complaint in 2005. The court heard a change in the law allowed him to be prosecuted for offences committed abroad.

Miss Willis said Evans would befriend underage girls, some who were "vulnerable and looking for protection", providing treats, alcohol and use of his computer while staying over at his caravan.

But he went on to sexually assault four girls, aged between nine and 15, from 2002 to 2008, often under the pretext of playing games with his victims.

Evans pleaded guilty to indecent assault, sexual activity with a child and three offences of sexual assault by touching and received three consecutive sentences of three years' imprisonment. He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and given an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, banning any unsupervised contact with anyone under 16.

The court heard he was questioned over sexual allegations against children in 2005 but the decision was taken by the Crown Prosecution Service not to prosecute him.

Judge Charles Wide QC said: "It is absolutely plain to me that you have a paedophilic interest in children and you seek out the company of children, some vulnerable and looking for support."

Matthew Kirk, mitigating, said the systems manager for a haulage firm claimed to have been looking after the drugs as a custodian for someone he was not prepared to name.
