Overturned lorry shuts motorway junction

A busy motorway junction near Northampton was closed for almost six hours after a lorry overturned on a nearby roundabout.

Motorists planning to use junction 15a of the M1, near Rothersthorpe, south west of Northampton, were diverted away from the area after the lorry overturned at around 6.30am yesterday.

The lorry driver suffered only minor injuries in the crash, which caused widespread disruption in the area.

Police say the lorry was about to join the motorway when it overturned at the roundabout underneath the M1.

As a consequence, the roads leading to junction 15a were then closed to allow the lorry to be recovered.

Traffic was diverted, with motorists hoping to travel southbound along the M1 asked to travel to junction 15, while traffic aiming to travel northbound were advised to join the motorway at junction 16.

The road reopened at around 1pm after the lorry was recovered and the highway was made safe.
