Organ swap woman is as fit as she ever was
A double organ transplant patient has reported she is as fit as she has ever been eight years on from her life-saving operation.
Natasha Rogers, now aged 35, had a major operation in 2001 to fit her with a donated heart and lungs without which she would have died.
The Chronicle & Echo has followed her story for more than 25 years and readers have watched as her fitness has fluctuated, leading to her having to take a back seat from dedicated fundraising for transplant charities.
But she is now approaching normal levels of health and has just had a hugely encouraging set of medical tests which revealed her and her replacement organs to be fighting fit.
Natasha said: "I want to show the people of Northamptonshire through your newspaper how well I'm doing.
"It's now more eight years since that remarkable day and everything is going really well.
"I recently had my eight-year check up at Harefield Hospital and the doctors were really pleased with my progress.
"My lung function tests were the best ever and my kidney function levels have increased.
"As a family we've bought a Wii Fit machine and I now use this every day.
"I keep a special note of my progress and this has really helped improve my lung function. I feel great in myself and live each day to the full. I'm determined to used this new life in a way that could show others what the benefits of transplantation are."
The double transplant was necessary because her circulation problems, caused by a hole in the heart, were causing serious breathing difficulties.
Although eight years has now passed since the operation, Natasha said her gratitude to the donor and their family remains undiminished.
She said: "As I live each day, I will never forget the special gifts that I have been given from the family that, at a very sad time, decided to donate the organs of their loved one. To them I want to say a very, very big thank you. I will always be thankful and never, ever forget you."
