Opponent of home plans picket council HQ

Protestors against massive housing development plans for Northampton, Daventry and Towcester picketed council headquarters where the plans were discussed last night.

About 50 members of the Northants Residents' Alliance held their protest outside South Northamptonshire Council's headquarters in Towcester where proposals to build more than 40,000 new houses around the three towns were discussed.

The leader of the protest group, Northampton resident Roger Kingston, said: "These plans are madness; they're an unimaginably big number.

"The problem seems to be they just want to build these houses as close to the M1 as possible so they can fit in all the people who can't afford homes in London. People are outraged by the whole thing."

The proposals were first revealed by the Chron at the end of last month.

Documents seen by councillors last night suggest developments up to 2026 could include 18,000 homes between Grange Park, Wootton and Little Houghton, 5,663 between Moulton and Overstone, 2,200 on the edge of Collingtree, 6,900 on the edge of Duston, more than 5,300 around Daventry and almost 5,000 in South Northamptonshire.

During the meeting of the West Northamptonshire Joint Planning Unit (JPU), members of the public expressed serious concerns about the impact the possible development could have.

But members of the JPU assured residents the proposals were still far off being a reality.
