One dead and M1 completely closed following four lorry pile-up
A section of the M1 motorway could remain closed until 2pm following a fatal lorry crash this morning.
Thames Valley Police have confirmed that the southbound carriageway of the motorway will stay closed between junction 15 at Northampton and junction 14 at Milton Keynes for up to three more hours.
It follows a crash involving four lorries at around 4.40am, killing one driver at the scene.
The three other drivers received minor injuries.
A police spokesman said: "All three lanes of the southbound carriageway remain completely closed from junction 15 to allow the vehicles to be recovered.
"It is expected the motorway will remain closed for the next two to three hours."
The East Midlands Ambulance Service received support at the scene from doctors Dr John Trenfield and Dr Matthew Wyse, volunteers for East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme, a charity which provides professional medical assistance at large-scale emergencies.
Drivers were forced to seek alternative routes and heavy traffic caused subsequent tailbacks on the A45 and the A508.
Congestion at the Saxon Avenue roundabout at junction 15 also caused delays for drivers travelling in both directions.
