Olympic medallist praises county's sports stars

Sporting stars from across the county were awarded for their achievements at an awards ceremony in Northampton this week.

More than 300 athletes, coaches and volunteers attended the fifth Northamptonshire Sports Awards at the Park Inn Hotel in Northampton.

Katharine Merry, the Olympic bronze medallist at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, hosted the ceremony.

She said: "Northamptonshire has a fine collection of talented and committed athletes, clubs and volunteers all working hard to help people achieve and also enjoy sport in the county."

Winners will now go on to represent Northamptonshire at the BBC East Sports Awards and/or Sport Coach UK Awards later in the year.

Winners at this year's awards included head coach at Northampton Swim Club Jacquie Marshall; Will Pursey, from Daventry; Samantha Green, from Northampton Sea Cadets and Sailing; Castle Primary School, Northampton; Stephen Welyczko; Claire Stancliffe, from England Deaf Ladies Football Squad and Charlotte Bell, from Northampton Swim Club.
