Nurse 'stole from patients to fund casino trip'
A nurse gambled with patients money in a desperate bid to pay off her spiralling debts, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.
Elizabeth Fayers, 45, raided the safe at the Skiddaw Walk mental health unit in Lakeview, Northampton to fund trips to the casino, it was claimed at the hearing in London today.
She is also alleged to have grabbed petty cash and more than 100 belonging to a patient to gamble while working a nightshift in March 2005.
Fayers, from Towcester, then borrowed 400 from her boyfriends's sister so she could put it back in the safe, the hearing was told.
Nursing assistant Mary Sheppard told the panel Fayers left her alone to look after 19 patients for more than six hours that night.
She said: "Jill (as Fayers is known] said she had got to go to the casino because she owed an incredible amount of money and was trying to win it back.
"I didn't say anything as I didn't really think she would go, but she did."
Fayers denies the allegations and that her fitness to practise as a nurse is impaired.
The hearing continues.
