Northamptonshire Police given Blackberries to fight crime

Hi-tech hand-held computers will become the latest crime- fighting tool for Northamptonshire Police, after the force made a successful bid for Government funding.

Up to 700 BlackBerries will be given to frontline officers and staff to help them access vital information at the touch of a button, cut out paperwork and spend more time on patrol.

Funding for the computers was announced today, with more than 8 million going to five forces in the East Midlands, including Northamptonshire.

Peter Maddison, the Chief Constable of Northamptonshire and joint chairman of the East Midlands regional collaboration board, said the new computers would help improve the service officers can provide county residents.

He said: "Mobile data devices will make it easier for frontline personnel in neighbourhood policing teams, scenes of crimes officers and response officers, to do their job more efficiently.

"This funding will greatly help us move forward in improving the service the public receives."
