Retail crime, opportunist theft, street drinking and begging will all be targeted in Operation Lapland,

In Northampton, the Northamptonshire Police’s operation to drive down Christmas crime and anti-social behaviour will see increased patrols in the town centre to look after busy shoppers and shopkeepers.

Inspector Dave Rayfield, of Northampton Central police, said: “We will be targeting the anti-social behaviour associated with street drinking and begging in the town.

“And together with our partners, we are hoping to reduce store-related crime from what it was last year.”

In the east of the town, anti-social behaviour hotspots will be focused on.

Sergeant Steve Bedford, of Northampton East police, said: “We will be running an anti-social behaviour response car around the east of the town, similar to successful operations that were undertaken during the summer months and around Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.

“We hope to be able to respond to incidents of anti-social behaviour as quickly as possible.”

School engagement is a key focus in the south-west of the town, with local Safer Communities Team officers going into schools to talk about the impact of anti-social behaviour, give crime prevention advice inform pupils how to stay safe this time of year.

And Inspector Jen Helm, of Northampton South-West police, said: “Our work on alcohol action will also take us into licensed premises between December 1 and 23.

“We will be keeping a close eye on a number of premises and locations in Far Cotton, Dallington and Duston, which have had issues with under-age drinkers.”

Sergeant Sam Dobbs, of Daventry police, said: “Every retail store in Daventry town centre will have one visit a day from my officers.

“Key weekends during the holiday period will be covered until 2am and our CCTV coverage in the town will be extended for the whole of December.”
