Northampton’s Market Square goes red to raise heart disease message

THE Market Square, turned red in support of a British Heart Foundation appeal to make Northampton one of the healthiest towns in the country.

The nation’s cardiac charity launched National Heart Month in the heart of Northampton with a red floodlit Market Square at dusk.

Charity bosses are trying to capitalise on the fact Northampton Borough Council signed up last year to become an official heart town.

It has pledged to support the British Heart Foundation in raising awareness about how to avoid heart disease, which is the UK’s most lethal condition.

Nigel Cole, the charity’s fund-raising manager, said: “Cardiovascular disease can affect anyone, young and old, perhaps a baby born with a hole in the heart or a friend or colleague who suffers a heart attack.

“Whether you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol we are working to ensure these conditions can one day be eliminated.

“It’s wonderful to see the Market Square lighting up red to highlight our campaign and we really appreciate the support of Northampton Borough Council.

“I hope people who live in Northampton, and visitors, will admire the Market Square and remember the BHF needs their support to fight the country’s biggest killer.”

The Market Square turned red to bring home to Northampton people that National Heart Month is the ideal time to think about their own heart health, and to go ‘Red for Heart’ to raise vital funds for the BHF, by joining in National Wear Red Day on Friday February 24 or choose to organise their own fund-raising event any time in February.

Anyone wanting to get involved can order a free fund-raising kit at bhf.org.uk/red or call 0300 330 0645.

There is also the opportunity to celebrate Heart Month by attending the ‘Hearty Party’ at Northampton Saints on Friday February 10. The event will include a giant raffle, a three course meal and dancing to ‘The Coolbeans’.

Some tickets, priced at £30, are still available from Kathryn Whatton on Northampton 715012 or by emailing Kathryn@kmwbusiness solutions.com
