Real Ale campaigners CAMRA have named The Lamplighter in Northampton among its 210 top pubs in the country.

The list of venues has been announced to coincide with Community Pubs Month, set to run throughout April.

Local CAMRA branches, which consist of thousands of volunteers, judge all of the pubs in their area to find the best local pub in their area to be included in the list.

Owner of the Overstone Road venue, Paul Hanna, said he was thrilled to be considered Northampton’s best.

“We’re over the moon,” he said. “We’ve been awarded some of the CAMRA seasonal pub awards but never the pub of the year. It’s recognition for a lot of hard work that’s gone into this place. It’s a great achievement for us”

Mr Hanna, 39, has run the pub with brother James, 40, for the past three years and says its quality ales from micro-brewers, live music and popular Sunday roasts have helped it make the CAMRA list.

Judges rate venues on their decor, value for money, customer service and the quality of its real ale.

The Lamplighter will now go through to battle it out against 29 other pubs for the crown of best pub in the East Midlands area.

Colin Valentine, CAMRA chairman said: “I would like to thank all of the volunteers that have judged pubs up and down the country. This can take a lot of dedication to find the best real ale pubs in the area. We like to announce the winners in Community Pubs Month to highlight the best pubs Britain has to offer to help raise the profile of pub-going.”
