Northampton mum whose life has been '˜ruined' by daily seizures continues fight for £100k operation

Mother of two Leanne Lyon is hoping to complete the 5km Blacklight Run around Sixfields on Saturday, March 5 to help her cause.

The 42-year-old was born with a rare brain tumour called a hypothalamic hamartoma, which causes her to have daily seizures, often with embarrassing side effects.

Ms Lyon, from New Duston, says she has unknowingly taken clothes off while shopping in the supermarket or while picking her children up from school.

But as the condition only affects one in every 200,000 people, treatment is not available in the UK.

Instead Ms Lyon, who needs a carer to complete everyday tasks, is having to raise more than £100,000 to have keyhole surgery to ablate the tumour in Arizona, USA.

The mother-of-two says she is fighting for the treatment on behalf of her children, 10-year-old Kieran and seven-year-old Megan, who often have to take care of her when she has her seizures.

“I am so desperate to get better for them,” she said.

“I know it is going to take a long time but I am trying to stay positive.”

But Ms Lyon has a way to go to get to her target. She has currently raised just over £4,600 of her £100,000 target.

She completed the Blacklight Run last year, raising just over £400 and she is hoping to top figure this year.

Though her condition is not immediately life threatening, the seizures can strike at any time and can leave her bed-ridden for hours on end.

“I just don’t know what it is like to be a mother,” Leanne said.

“My tumour has ruined my life, it has ruined my marriage, I am just hoping I can raise enough to have the tumour taken out.”

The Blacklight Run, which sees participants daubed in neon paint, is set to take place on Saturday, March 5, from 5pm until 9pm.
