Northampton North MP Michael Ellis has asked the Environment Minister to treat concerns about the spread of a fatal dog diesease in Northamptonshire as a “matter of priority.”

Mr Ellis has written to Owen Paterson after a case of a disease, similar to the deadly Alabama Rot, was confirmed as the cause of death of a Jack Russell which was walked in Salcey Forest, near Northampton.

In his letter to Mr Paterson Mr Ellis states: “I am concerned as the experts involved in this case have said that the disease is similar to ‘Alabama Rot’ but is not the same disease making treatment and prevention much more difficult.

“In the circumstances I would very much appreciate it if you could look into this as a priority and ask for a report from the Chief Veterinary Officer.

“My constituents and many dog owners across the country will be very concerned about this troubling issue and so I do hope that swift action can be taken to ascertain exactly what the disease is so that action can be taken, including the allocation of appropriate resources, to

hopefully provide some comfort for dog owners in Northamptonshire and elsewhere.”
