Northampton gran in bid to write England football anthem
A grandmother from Northampton has launched her last-ditch bid to write England's football national anthem.
In 2006, Lakeview resident Thelma Brown, aged 70, wrote a song which made it through to the final of Virgin Radio's national competition to find an anthem for the 2006 World Cup.
Despite making it through to the last five in the competition, the football fanatic's tune was beaten at the final whistle by Sham 69's World Cup-inspired re-working of their 1968 hit, Hurry Up Harry.
Undeterred, the pensioner has now written a new song, Forever England (Wembley), which she hopes will be adopted by both the England team and fans for the 2010 World Cup.
She said: "All I want is for England fans to have their own national anthem. I was inspired to write this song by the new Wembley and I would love to have it played there. I just hope we can get it played on the radio and the England fans latch onto it."
The Cobblers and Manchester United fan picked up thousands of fans when her 2006 song received regular radio play.
But she has claimed the new tune will be her last bid to write a hit record for the national team.
She said: "This will be my last crack at writing an England song. The last one did very well, but I think this one has even more of a chance. We've got some really good feedback from people who've heard it and I hope it's going to be a great success."
The song is a passionate tribute to both the Wembley stadium and the England team and their fans.
It was written by Thelma and musician Rob Arnall and sung by pop tenor Tony Dangerfield, with backing from the Luton-based Vauxhall Male Voice Choir.
The team behind the song are currently in talks with executives at Wembley and they hope the tune could be played before England's World Cup qualifying match against Kazakhstan on October 11.
