A Northampton shoe factory will feature on BBC2’s Great British Railway Journey, presented by former Cabinet Minister Michael Portillo, next Wednesday.

Crockett & Jones, based in Abington, hosted a visit by Mr Portillo in April last year as part of the filming for an episode titled ‘Northampton to Nuneaton’.

Mr Portillo chose to visit the shoe factory as he wanted to find out more about a reference to ‘The Cobbler’s Lapstone’ in Bradshaw’s Railway Guide, the literature on which Great British Railway Journey is based.

James Fox, digital manager of Crockett & Jones, said: “The Cobbler’s Lapstone” is the sound of hammering leather soles.

“In the Victorian era, when the Bradshaw Railway guide was published, shoe factories in the town were enjoying dramatic growth. Mr Portillo was shown round the factory and had a go at making shoes by hand.

“He is a real character and he seemed to enjoy himself.”

Crockett & Jones will feature in episode 8 of Great British Railway Journey which airs on BBC2 on Wednesday, January 15 at 6.30pm.
