No. 10 reception for unsung hero
A retired nurse from Northamptonshire who has raised more than £55,000 over the past 20 years has been recognised as an 'everyday hero' at a Downing Street reception.
The phenomenal efforts of Elizabeth Haycock from Abthorpe led to her being one of only six volunteer fund-raisers who were invited down to London to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Thursday.
For the past 20 years on the last Thursday of October, Elizabeth has put on a fund-raising day and evening held in her home and has so far raised more than 55,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
She said: "It was a lovely day. We had canapes and drinks in the garden and then we met Gordon Brown who spoke to us all. Then we were allowed to look round Downing Street and we went and had a look in the cabinet office."
Until she recently retired, Elizabeth was the longest serving Marie Curie Cancer Care nurse in Northamptonshire. She had nursed local people for over 25 years and was awarded a Gold Long Service Award in 2002.
Sarah Raubusch, community fund-raising co-ordinator for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: "Probably the best thing about Elizabeth Haycock is that she has done so much to inspire, persuade and insist that others make Marie Curie Cancer Care their charity of choice and has found many other people to help with fund-raising in Northamptonshire and beyond."
The retired nurse often gives talks about her work for Marie Curie Cancer Care to promote the charity as well as working tirelessly at fund-raising events.
Marea Roberts, area fund-raising manager for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: "There are hundreds of thousands of volunteer fund-raisers who collectively raise a huge amount of money each year. In turn, they make a phenomenal contribution to the work that many voluntary organisations are able to undertake."
Elizabeth has also worked hard to involve the local Young Farmers Club in fund-raising and together they co-ordinate the Daffodil Collections in the Towcester area.
